For more than 20 years, Enel Distribución has been developing its Public Spaces Recovery program for communities, through the implementation of lighting systems for multiple sports fields in various Metropolitan Region districts, corresponding to the Company’s concession area. To date, 174 sports fields have been provided with lighting in 30 districts of Santiago, turning them into renovated places for recreation and social development of hundreds of thousands of families.
The initiative currently aims at the modernization and maintenance of the systems already installed, through LED technology, which achieves significant energy savings, exceeding 80%. This step towards energy efficiency is already a reality in municipal sports fields such as Pedro Aguirre Cerda, Santiago, Independencia, La Reina, and Estación Central. These fields are used by both the residents as well as by teams that participate every year in the traditional Copa Enel (former Copa Chilectra), a soccer competition that has been taking place for 16 years and in which neighborhood women and men’s soccer teams participate in sub-15 and sub-13 categories, respectively.
In 2017, the Enel Cup is being renewed, to become a competition that integrates representatives of the 33 districts of the Metropolitan Region, which are part of the concession area of Enel Distribución, with teams from the Coronel and Mejillones districts in both the southern and the northern regions of the country.
The evolution of this program towards energy efficiency is an example of Enel's efforts for achieving sustainability of its initiatives and the promotion of actions that generate value to the surrounding communities.
