Santiago, September 1, 2025 – To prevent electrical accidents and promote safe celebrations during the national holidays, Enel Distribución introduced a new version of its preventive campaign "Volantín Seguro" (Safe Kite Flying), which aims to increase public awareness about the dangers of flying kites near power lines and using cured string.
During 2024, the company recorded 731 power failures caused by kites tangled in power lines, of which 332 occurred in September. These situations not only affect the continuity of supply, but also put people's lives at risk, especially children and adolescents.
Enel Distribución is calling for the prevention of accidents related to the use of kites in urban areas, in many cases due to the presence of cured thread or conductive materials that become entangled in power lines.
“Several years ago, we made a commitment to promote good practices so that this tradition, which brings the whole family together, can be carried out responsibly and safely. We hope that our awareness campaign will help prevent accidents while this traditional game is being played in our country, always seeking open and safe spaces to fly kites, always away from power lines,” explained Francisco Messen, Operations and Maintenance Manager at Enel Distribución.
Current Risks and Recommendations
In addition to causing power outages when flying kites near power lines, this practice can lead to electrocution, severe burns, accidents, and falls, especially when attempting to retrieve a kite from trees, poles, or electrical infrastructure. To ensure safe kite use, the company offers these recommendations:
- Do not use metal or aluminum foil in building the kite.
- Do not use cured thread (made from ground glass) or nylon.
- Ensure the lifting area is safe.
- Avoid flying kites close to power lines.
- Do not climb poles, high-voltage towers, or trees to retrieve a kite.
- Avoid crossing streets while flying kites to prevent accidents caused by distraction.
Enel Distribución also advises against using helium-filled metal balloons, which are very popular during this season, as they contain metal fibers that can cause short circuits when they touch electrical cables, leading to power outages and safety hazards.
