Santiago, August 2, 2024—Due to the weather front affecting the Metropolitan Region with unprecedented gusts of wind and rain, Enel Distribución continues working to progressively restore service in the 33 concession municipalities. At 6:00 p.m., approximately 200 points of failure in the medium-voltage network resulted in around 550 thousand customers being without power. The most affected districts are Las Condes, Maipú, Pudahuel, Colina, and Quilicura, while Pedro Aguirre Cerda, Til Til, and Providencia have experienced the fewest outages.
The Chilean Meteorological Office records indicate that wind gusts reached speeds of up to 124 km/h in some regions of the capital. This, along with heavy rainfall, led to the fall of nearly 2,000 trees, damage to power lines and poles, and extensive harm to the electrical infrastructure. As a result, significant and intricate repair efforts have been underway since early Thursday morning.
The company has dedicated all of its technical resources to address the incidents and restore regular service as soon as possible. "The events of early yesterday morning were unprecedented. We are committed to restoring power to our customers in coordination with the authorities," stated Victor Tavera, general manager of Enel Distribución.
Priority has been given to registered electro-dependent customers. They can access a unique telephone service to install generators in their homes. In the past two days, we have delivered 100 generator sets to electro-dependent customers and proactively contacted registered customers to offer our assistance.
Work in progress in all communities
The technical teams are working in the field with up to 8 times more resources than usual due to the significant damage to the electrical infrastructure caused by fallen trees and other debris. This extensive work will delay fully restoring power to the affected areas.
The estimated time for power restoration in each community is outlined in the table below:
