The Canela Windfarm (PEC by its Spanish acronym) is the country's first windfarm, launched in 2007. It can be found in the area of the same name, some 40 kms from the town, specifically at km 300 of the Ruta 5 Norte, Choapa Province, Coquimbo Region. Apart from the town, there are other 120 villages in the area including some fishing coves, with more than 80% of the inhabitants living in rural areas.

Canela is one of the places with the largest wind energy development in the country, totaling approximately 200 MW.

Various groups of algae harvesters were permitted access the coast through the PEC roads to collect their products, so the  Company and the users have jointly developed secure entry and driving protocols that allow this activity to be carried out in the best and safest way possible, as well as evaluating initiatives that would make their  activities more sustainable.

The PEC also has an observation point visited by hundreds of tourists who drive along the Ruta 5 Norte to the south, so much so that it has become one of the most popular vantage spots in the area where most drivers who pass this sector stop their vehicles to rest and relax.
