  • The project aims to reduce the commune's CO2e emissions by commissioning an electric waste collection truck with a 250-kilometer range.

Santiago, December 2, 2023. An alliance between the Municipality of Vitacura and Enel X allowed the incorporation of electromobility into household waste collection in the commune. The shared objective is to reduce the municipality's carbon footprint and contribute to the fight against climate change, promoting the development of more innovative and sustainable cities.

The Maxus collection truck, provided by Enel X and operated by Starco, has an autonomy of 250 kilometers and will travel between 100 and 120 kilometers daily through the different streets and roads of the municipality, collecting household waste utilizing a rear load that offers a compaction cycle of 15 seconds, with a capacity of 15 m3.

“We are thrilled about the public-private partnership enabling us to test an electric truck for collecting household waste. This initiative will help reduce noise pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, thereby contributing to a better quality of life for our neighbors and the planet." said the mayor of Vitacura, Camila Merino.

This project, together with the Municipality of Vitacura, will undoubtedly promote sustainability within the commune and will lay the foundations for a greater adoption of clean and renewable energies in the management of household waste in the country, making visible how electromobility can be a key element for the development of increasingly intelligent and sustainable cities," says Orlando Meneses, Enel X City, and Government Manager.

Incorporating electric mobility into household waste collection systems can bring about a wide range of benefits for the community. It can improve their quality of life and reduce environmental pollution levels. One of the main benefits is the reduction of polluting gases. By using clean energy sources such as electricity, collection trucks do not generate CO2e emissions, which positively impacts the community's air quality. Incorporating electric collection trucks for RSD in the Municipality of Vitacura will reduce approximately 42 tons of CO2e emissions on an average route.

Electric trucks offer several advantages over traditional vehicles, including lower noise levels and optimized operating costs. They are more energy-efficient, do not require fossil fuels for operation, and have a longer useful life, resulting in long-term savings for municipalities.
