Enel X ElectroRuta to install more than 140 charging stations in 2021 to reach nationwide coverage and 30% of project's goal

  • Chargers are being installed to cover strategic locations such as highways, airports, industrial and real estate hubs, retail and strip centers, and restaurants. The project has become the only one of its kind as the service will serve a broad spectrum of customers from different industries.
  • The Enel X ElectroRuta will cover more than 50% of the energy charging infrastructure required by electric cars, with an estimated one charging point per every 60 kilometers of highway.


Santiago, March 25, 2021 – Enel X’s “ElectroRuta” electric car charging infrastructure plan will link Chile with 1,200 charging points, from Arica to Punta Arenas, is progressing at a rapid pace, incorporating new regions and industrial segments. By 2021, Enel X expects to add more than 140 new charging points to the 170 existing electric stations that are already part of the most ambitious electromobility project in Latin America. Enel announced the launch of this project at the beginning of 2020.

Enel X strategically installs its charging points on highways, in airports, and for multiple industrial segments, including "green mining," universities, real estate hubs, retail and strip centers, and even for restaurants. Enel is becoming a pioneer due to the broad usability of the chargers across multiple sectors. The chargers are based on intelligent solutions that aim to meet different needs through technologies that allow vehicle battery charging at different speeds and in different places.

To use the charging infrastructure, electric vehicle owners can install the Enel X “JuicePass” application on their mobile phones. This provides options such as reserving charging time in advance and monitoring power outlets in real-time.

The first stage of implementing the charging points began in 2019 in the Metropolitan Region, where the highest demand is concentrated. It then expanded to different cities south of the country, including Concepción, Temuco, and Chillán. The urban coastal areas of Viña del Mar and Zapallar and the Santiago - Los Vilos section of the Ruta 5 Norte highway. This brings the total number of connected regions to date to five. Currently, the rollout of the ElectroRuta continues to advance to connect the whole country from Arica to Punta Arenas.

We have incorporated different segments and areas that will help  democratize electric mobility so it can be used by different companies, industries, retailers, motorists on our highways, and also in our homes,” said Karla Zapata, general manager of Enel X Chile.

There are currently some 1,000 electric cars on Chile's streets, and that number is expected to increase to 81,000 by 2025. With ElectroRuta, Enel X plans to provide more than 50% of the energy charging infrastructure that these cars require, with one charger installed for every 60 kilometers of road.

The ElectroRuta plan, based on smart charging solutions, aims to meet the different customer needs by implementing various technologies that allow the vehicle's battery to be charged at different speeds and various locations. These are modular, scalable, and turnkey solutions designed for individuals, companies, and institutions.

ElectroRuta, which Enel X announced at the beginning of 2020, is the most ambitious electromobility project in Latin America. It involves installing 1,200 charging points throughout Chile by 2025, allowing electric car users to travel more than 5,000 kilometers, from north to south, with guaranteed autonomy.
