  • The company will integrate two technologies at the same site with the new BESS system, transforming Finis Terrae into a hybrid power plant combining solar generation and battery energy storage.
  • Stored energy can be injected when transmission restrictions are absent, ensuring reliable operation, reducing dependence on thermal plants, and preventing greenhouse gas emissions, thereby promoting a cleaner, more sustainable system.

August 17, 2026 – Enel Chile, through its subsidiary Enel Green Power Chile, has begun constructing the Finis Terrae BESS, a new battery energy storage system. This initiative will integrate with the existing Finis Terrae photovoltaic park in Antofagasta, converting it into a hybrid power plant that combines solar energy generation with storage technologies in the same location.

The storage system will store 100 MW at the interconnection point, allowing it to hold renewable energy generated by the solar park and supply it to the National Electric System when required.

This project investigates Grid-Forming technology, allowing the plant's inverters to operate like traditional generators. This supports maintaining stable voltage and frequency, thereby improving the overall stability of the National Electric System.

Finis Terrae BESS, with an estimated annual storage capacity of 168 GWh, will greatly improve the country's energy infrastructure. For perspective, this capacity is about 12% of the total energy stored in the Pangue hydroelectric dam reservoir.

This initiative combines the BESS Las Salinas and Azabache BESS projects, both under construction. As a result, Enel’s total storage capacity exceeds 730 MW, including both active and planned projects.

This initiative by Enel Chile promotes investment projects aimed at improving renewable energy integration, strengthening the resilience of the National Electric System, and actively contributing to the country's energy transition.

BESS systems are vital for electricity generation because they store and shift renewable energy output, ensuring power is supplied efficiently when needed.

The start of Finis Terrae BESS construction signifies an important milestone in Enel's hybridization strategy. It combines renewable energy with storage to increase asset value, improve operational flexibility, and promote sustainable energy solutions, advancing the nation's energy transition.
