- Starting today, La Cabaña wind farm located in the Araucanía Region will convert the strong winds of the southern region of the country into 100% renewable energy. The new plant has a net installed capacity of 106 MW and will inject the power into the National Electric System.
Araucanía, February 22, 2024 - Enel Chile has received official authorization from the National Electric Coordinator to begin commercial operations at its new wind farm, La Cabaña, located in Araucanía. The approval came after Enel Green Power Chile, a subsidiary of Enel Chile, passed all necessary tests to ensure the safe operation of the renewable generation plant for both the system and operators, including tests for production and safety.
"We are delighted to celebrate the launch of our new La Cabaña wind farm, which was constructed using advanced techniques to minimize its environmental impact and reduce development time. Along with this, it is our first wind park that will incorporate a battery system, which will allow us to deliver energy more efficiently to the National Energy System," said Fabrizio Barderi, general manager of Enel Chile.
La Cabaña, located in the Araucanía region, is expected to produce around 330 GWh, energy that could power 123,000 Chilean homes annually while avoiding the emission of approximately 265,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.
La Cabaña's construction involved installing 22 Direct Drive wind turbines, each with a nominal power of 4.8 MW. These turbines are the latest technology for wind farm development and allow for better utilization of the wind profile in the project's location.
It is important to consider that, in line with the company's hybridization strategy, this new wind farm considers the incorporation of an Energy Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 34 MW-2h. It is expected to begin commercial operation of this storage section during this year.
