  • The Municipality of Sierra Gorda received the new "Community Eco-Workshop," a space for social development where neighbors can carry out various activities to strengthen productive skills, such as workshops and training.
  • This new center comes from reusing ENEL structures from the COP25 in 2019. We recovered more than 80% of usable material, saving 9.7 tons of raw materials and thus avoiding the emission of 15.7 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Antofagasta, October 28, 2022 - Enel Green Power Chile launched the "Community Eco-Workshop" center in the illustrious Municipality of Sierra Gorda. The infrastructure enhances social development by offering various activities, such as eco-technological workshops and training. The Sierra Gorda Municipality coordinates these activities aimed at promoting craftwork through the recovery of waste. This project comes with a gender approach, allowing women in the community to develop innovative ventures to strengthen personal, family, and economic growth, with a sustainable and ecological seal.

"The Ecocentro seeks to become a space where women and neighbors can acquire knowledge, allowing them to fulfill their artistic and entrepreneurial vocation, incorporating circular economy concepts through valorizing raw materials for new product cycles. In a territory with a strong energy industry, generating community spaces where industrial waste can be given a second life is crucial. Turning it into economic activity for its inhabitants allows us to advance in creating a real shared value." said Montserrat Palomar, Sustainability Manager of Enel Chile.

The Community Eco-Workshop considers incorporating universal access standards and consists of two multipurpose modules of 40 and 60 square meters each. Both rooms are equipped with bathrooms and have natural lighting through openings in the facades. Another relevant feature is that its interior has 3-meter-high ceilings to promote various activities without having problems with space. Additionally, an inner courtyard formally links the two sections with an enclosing wall, generating an articulating area that can be used for exhibitions and as a stage for future presentations.

"The inauguration and opening of this new eco-workshop is part of our administration's guidelines to promote local development in terms of entrepreneurship and new skill generation for our neighbors. I want to thank the company ENEL for contributing to our community and implementing the workshops that SEMBRA is currently executing. We are sure that this new space will give a development boost to men and women who work independently, " said the mayor of Sierra Gorda, Deborah Paredes. She added, "Finally, I would like to call our community neighbors to participate in the workshops currently offered and those planned for 2023. We want to make the most of the public spaces and resources provided by ENEL for our people's benefit".

It is essential to mention that Aguas Antofagasta S.A. participated in developing this Community Eco-Workshop, mainly implementing the sanitary infrastructure to provide the center with drinking water and a sewage system. At the same time, the Municipality will be responsible for the center's administration and maintenance as a direct benefit for the community of Sierra Gorda.
