Antofagasta, October 8th, 2020 – Enel Chile, through its renewable energy subsidiary Enel Green Power Chile, has started construction on its new 204 MW Domeyko photovoltaic (PV) park, located in the Antofagasta Region. The solar plant is due to be completed by July 2021, and will involve a total investment of 164 million US dollars.

"Our journey to a cleaner and more efficient generation mix is going forward at full speed. The addition of renewable capacity is one of Enel Chile's initiatives in the leadership of the energy transition in Chile, which includes the acceleration of the decarbonization of the generation matrix and the electrification of the consumption,” said Paolo Pallotti, general manager of Enel Chile.

James Lee Stancampiano, General Manager of EGP Chile said “With Domeyko, we have broken ground on four solar projects since August 2019  in Chile, after 61 MW Azabache, 126 MW Finis Terrae expansion and 382 MW Campos del Sol, for a projected installed capacity of almost 800 MW. Thanks to these projects, alongside Enel’s coal phase out efforts, we are showcasing that we are truly progressing towards a fully sustainable, decarbonized energy mix in Chile, in spite of the challenges of this period.”

The Domeyko Park will be spread across an area of approximately 700 hectares and will include the installation of 472.590 bifacial mono-crystalline PV modules, with cutting-edge technology that allows for greater efficiency in capturing solar radiation. Once operational, the plant will produce around 589 GWh, avoiding the emission of 439,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

During the construction of the facility, rigorous safety protocols are being implemented, in light of the ongoing pandemic and in line with the indications provided by health authorities, with the aim to ensure the necessary protection to the nearly 600 workers who will be involved in the construction. The measures include the mandatory and permanent use of personal protection equipment, and in addition crews are maintaining social distancing.

The Domeyko PV park is part of a portfolio of renewable projects that seeks to add 2 GW of installed capacity by 2022, half of which is already under construction.
