Enel Generación announces total closure of Rapel reservoir floodgates tomorrow

Santiago, August 24, 2023. In the face of the significant increase in water levels affecting the Cachapoal and Tinguiririca rivers due to rainfall that accumulated over 350 mm in 72 hours in the O'Higgins Region, Enel Generación has been working intensively to mitigate, to the best extent possible, the impact of these rising waters on the downstream and riverside population. The actions carried out before and during the storm included lowering the reservoir level to a minimum before the increase in water flow, controlled releases throughout the flooding process, continuous monitoring of all variables including precipitation and waterway forecasts, as well as timely communication with the relevant authorities.

These actions have restricted the Rapel Reservoir discharge to a maximum of 3500 m3/s, thus mitigating the peak inflow of 5000 m3/s naturally received from the Cachapoal and Tinguiririca tributaries. In the early hours of this morning, the controlled maximum reservoir level was reached, initiating the process to reduce discharge. As of 2:30 PM today, the evacuation has been reduced to approximately 1600 m3/s. In the upcoming hours, the plan is to continue decreasing the outflow until the floodgates are closed entirely tomorrow morning.
