The San Ignacio del Huinay Foundation is a private non-profit institution that was create for the purpose of defending, preserving and promoting the biogeographical inheritance of the town of Huinay, specifically the fjords formed in the Los Lagos Region of Chile.
It was founded in 1998 by Endesa Chile, now Enel Generación Chile and the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso and inaugurated in 2001. It has a Scientific Center that covers 34,000 hectares in the Comau Fjord, Province of Palena. There the Foundation promotes biodiversity conservation, scientific research and sustainable development techniques. All of this is done in a unique and privileged natural laboratory, open to the national and international scientific community. This project is based on the following three lines of action that are materialized under the concept of sustainable development:
- Scientific research
- Biodiversity conversation
- Community support
In order to carry out the active conservation of the Huinay environment, the Foundation decided to not only preserve the existing species, but to work to recover deteriorated areas and ecosystems that have already been impacted in the area.
